Cooking perfect brown rice is incredibly easy. The process is similar to cooking pasta noodles:
- Fill a large pot with 8 to 10 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
- Add a cup of rinsed brown rice and allow it to boil for 30 minutes.
- Take off the heat, drain well, and return it to the pot.
- Cover and let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Fluff with a fork and serve.
Ways to Enhance the Flavor of Brown Rice
Making the switch from white rice to brown rice can be difficult to get used to at first, but as your taste buds adjust, there are simple ways to enhance the flavor. To make it more palatable, try one of these methods:
- Instead of water, boil the rice in vegetable broth (low-sodium if needed).
- Salt the boiling water prior to adding the rice.
- After the rice is fluffed, mix in a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil or vegan butter.
- Season the rice with fresh chopped herbs (cilantro, parsley, basil, or dill).
- Season the rice with dried spices (curry powder, turmeric, cumin, or smoked paprika).
- Add a splash of tamari, soy sauce, or fresh lemon juice.
- Add fresh cooked flavors like caramelized onions, roasted garlic, toasted nuts, or sautéed mushrooms.

Storage & Tips
Storage: Cooked rice should be refrigerated no more than two hours after it has been prepared to prevent bacterial growth. Leftover brown rice can be kept in a refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freeze in freezer-safe containers or storage bags for 3-4 months. Reheat brown rice in the microwave or a saucepan on the range.
Tips:
- Always rinse the rice well prior to cooking for cleaner, fluffier, and better-tasting rice.
- Use enough water. The rule of thumb is 8-10 cups for every 1 cup of uncooked brown rice. To double the rice, simply double the water. (I use a large stockpot.)
- Bring to a rolling boil first before adding the rice.
- Use leftovers to make vegan fried rice or freeze in portions for meal prep.

Foolproof Method for Perfect Brown Rice
Ingredients
- 8-10 cups (1.9-2.4L) water (or vegetable broth)
- 1 cup (200g) brown rice
- Salt (optional)
Method
- Fill a large pot with 8 to 10 cups of water (or vegetable broth). Bring to a boil on high heat.
- Meanwhile, measure 1 cup of brown rice. Rinse the rice well in a fine-mesh colander. Add to boiling water and give it a stir. Boil rice for 30 minutes, without stirring.
- Remove the pot from the heat. Drain the rice and return it to the pot. Cover with a fitted lid (or aluminum foil) and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. (This allows the steam from inside the pot to finish cooking the rice.)
- After the full 10 minutes, fluff with a fork. Add salt or other seasonings to taste. Serve warm and enjoy!
